Teach Science / Baking Rocks

How are rocks made?

If you’re looking for a hands-on and memorable activity to teach your students how the three main types of rock are formed, then read on…!

Following a simple choc-chip biscuit recipe, students simulate the formation of sedimentary rocks by applying gentle pressure and heat from their hands and rolling the dough into balls.

Once the biscuits are placed in the oven and ‘heated by the Earth’s core’ they become metamorphic rocks!

In order to simulate the creation of an igneous rock, such as obsidian, simply melt pieces of chocolate and observe how these ‘rocks’ appear shiny and smooth once cooled.

Have a delicious time!
